Parliamentary candidates support UNISON's million voices campaign

Parliamentary hopefuls queue up to join the Million Voices campaign. Labour candidate Anneliese Dodds and Rob White of the Green Party, who are both fighting for the Reading East seat at the coming general election, joined together recently to commit their support for UNSON's campaign.

A Million Voices for Public Services calls for investment and support for the people who provide public healthcare, education, housing and social services rather than privatisation and cuts.

Green Parliamentary candidate for Reading East, Rob White said: "Public servants -- whether they are hospital porters, teaching assistants, policemen and women, nurses, library assistants or lollipop men and women -- all need our support and appreciation at this time.

"It's quite wrong that public services pay the price -- literally -- for the money pumped in to prop up the banks.

"As the recession puts everyone under pressure, and with the threat of more cuts and privatisation, we must all stand up for public service workers, and the essential and invaluable services they provide."

"This initiative is particularly important now in Reading as public sector jobs come under threat from all sides this winter."

Labour Parliamentary candidate for Reading East, Anneliese Dodds said: "I'm a proud supporter of Unison's 'Million Voices' campaign to protect the public services we all rely on. Public services don't just matter to the most vulnerable - although they are crucial to protect the elderly and unwell. Quality public services are also a key component of any civilised society, which believes that opportunities should not just flow from wealth, but be available to all".
